| London's Air Ambulance (formally
known as Virgin HEMS) is the helicopter emergency service for the London
area of the UK.
Capable of reaching anywhere inside the M25 (17.5%
of the UK population) within a maximum of twelve minutes, the helicopter
carries a doctor and paramedic specially trained to deal with major trauma
accidents and can be airbourne within two minutes of receiving an emergency
call. Since it's launch in 1989, HEMS have flown over 16,000 missions
across London.

Virgin HEMS is a registered charity
which receives some funding from the NHS, along with corporate sponsorship
most notably from the Virgin Group.
Despite this generosity, an additional £500,000
is required each year to keep one of London's most important services going.
Along with fundraising events, donations from the public play an important
part in raising the additonal funds needed.
